Here’s a look at what several experts are saying about the reasons behind the DeFi crash and their perspectives on what needs to be done for the sector to make a comeback. Failure to generate sustainable revenue One of the most frequently cited reasons for DeFi protocols struggling is their inability to generate sustainable income that adds meaningful value to the platform's ecosystem. Coinbase providing customer geolocation data to ICE: Report

The U.S. government agency is reportedly using Coinbase Tracer to access customers' historical geo-tracking data and transactions on over a dozen cryptocurrencies. A new report has indicated that crypto exchange Coinbase has provided Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents with a “suite of features” intended for tracking the company’s customers. According to the report, ICE has been granted access to an intelligence-gathering application, called Coinbase Tracer, that provides a variety of forensic data tracking capabilities. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is an government agency under the Department of Homeland Security. The primary purpose of ICE is to protect the country from cross-border crime and illegal immigration. Coinbase Tracer’s intent is to assist ICE with tracing malicious and fraudulent transactions on blockchains. According to The Intercept, the tool will allow ICE agents to “connect addresses to real-world entities.” An additional email rele

'Cryptoqueen' Ruja Ignatova makes FBI's Ten Most Wanted list

The Bulgarian-German businesswoman was last spotted in Athens in 2017, and now worth up to $100,000 to provide U.S. law enforcement with information about her. “Crypto” is often used as an honorific inside the community. United States Securities and Exchange Commission member Hester Peirce is called Crypto Mom for her steadfast support for digital assets, and Time magazine crowned Vitalik Buterin the Prince of Crypto . When Ruja Ignatova was given the title “Cryptoqueen” in a 2019 true-crime podcast, however, it was with far less endearment.  Ignatova was the creator of OneCoin, a purported cryptocurrency that proved to be a Ponzi scheme. According to law enforcement, her OneCoin Ltd. has defrauded more than 3 million investors of more than $4 billion since 2014. Her company has also been accused of bribing the presidents of Serbia and Bulgaria, among other things. Now Ignatova can add “most wanted” to her titular stylings, thanks to the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI),

USDC Exchange Reserves Rise As Investors Escape From Bitcoin

On-chain data shows the USD Coin exchange reserves have gone up recently, suggesting that investors may be exiting volatile markets like Bitcoin. USD Coin All Exchanges Reserve Has Been Climbing Up Recently As pointed out by an analyst in a CryptoQuant post, there have been signs of selling from Bitcoin investors for moving into USDC. The USD Coin “all exchanges reserve” is an indicator that measures the total amount of the stablecoin currently present in wallets of all exchanges. When the value of this metric goes up, it means investors are either depositing their USDC to exchanges right now, or shifting to the stablecoin from other cryptos. Investors usually move into stablecoins like USD Coin when they want to escape from the volatility associated with cryptos like Bitcoin. On the other hand, when the value of the reserve heads down, it implies the amount of USDC on exchanges is decreasing at the moment. FTX on the verge of purchasing BlockFi in $25M in fire sale

The cryptocurrency derivatives exchange could potentially buy out the troubled lender for pennies on the dollar. Cryptocurrency exchange FTX is close to purchasing digital asset lender BlockFi's remaining assets for $25 million, according to CNBC. According to sources close to the matter, BlockFi's equity investors were wiped out and are now writing their positions off at a loss. In addition, the FTX deal could take multiple months to close, opening up the possibility that the price tag could shift over that period. In June 2021, BlockFi had a reported valuation of $5 billion . Earlier this year, BlockFi had over 1 million clients, over $10 billion in assets and deposits, and had distributed more than $700 million in crypto rewards and interest. However, BlockFi's fortunes quickly soured after it reportedly became a major creditor of the now troubled hedge fund Three Arrow Capital , also known as 3AC. As a result, it was forced to liquidate 3AC's positions amountin

US govt delays enforcement of crypto broker reporting requirements: Report

The reporting requirements, aimed at reducing the size of the tax gap, were scheduled to take effect in January 2023, with crypto firms sending reports to the IRS starting in 2024. The provision in the U.S. infrastructure bill signed into law in November, which will require financial institutions and crypto brokers to report additional information, could reportedly be delayed. According to a Wednesday report from Bloomberg, the United States Department of the Treasury and Internal Revenue Service may not be willing to enforce crypto brokers collecting information on certain transactions starting in January 2023, citing people familiar with the matter. The potential delay could reportedly affect billions of dollars related to capital gains taxes — the Biden administration’s budget for the government for the 2023 fiscal year previously estimated modifying the crypto tax rules could reduce the deficit by roughly $11 billion. Under the current infrastructure bill, Section 6050I manda

Stratis (STRAX) gains 200%+ after Sky Dream Mall metaverse and stablecoin announcement

STRAX price bucked the market-wide bearish downtrend by rallying 200% after the team unveiled plans for a British pound stablecoin and a new metaverse. Bear markets can be incredibly harsh for projects that have little adoption or lack an applicable use case, but projects that dedicate to building regardless of market sentiment tend to succeed in the next market cycle. One project that has seen a noticeable boost in volume, despite the wider-market downtrend is Stratis (STRAX), a blockchain development platform designed to help enterprise businesses establish their own blockchain in a simplified manner. Data from Cointelegraph Markets Pro and TradingView shows that after hitting a low of $0.365 on June 15, the price of STRAX has rallied 220% to hit a daily high of $1.20 on June 29 amid a surging 24-hour trading volume. NYDIG study calculates the value of regulation worldwide in terms of BTC price gains

The crypto-positive financial services company looked at Bitcoin prices at intervals following regulatory events and found clear evidence of the events’ effects. The need for regulation is a common theme in discussions about cryptocurrency, and the claim is often taken to be self-evident. Now, financial services company New York Digital Investment Group (NYDIG) has done some number crunching to prove the point. In a new study, NYDIG quantifies the effect of regulation on the price of Bitcoin ( BTC ) worldwide. NYDIG studied Bitcoin prices at regular intervals following regulatory events affecting digital asset taxation, accounting and payments, as well as decisions on the legality of service providers and the digital assets themselves. The research looked at the Americas, Europe, China and Asia except for China, and confined itself to the period between September 30, 2011, and March 31, 2022. The number of regulatory events considered in the study varied between 17 in the Americas

Tracking Whales, What This Bitcoin Divergence Could Hint About BTC’s Price

The trader used data provided by Material Indicators to show what the different investors’ classes are doing while BTC records losses. As seen below, investors with bid orders of about $100,000 (purple in the chart below) have increased their buying pressure as almost every other and smaller investor class sells into this price action. Extreme Fear Remains: Recapping What’s Behind The Crypto Market Panic

The current streak of extreme fear is already the longest ever in crypto history, and it’s continuing on still. Here’s a recap of the major events responsible for this bottom sentiment. Crypto Fear And Greed Index Continues To Point At “Extreme Fear” The “fear and greed index” is an indicator that tells us about the general market sentiment among crypto investors. The metric uses a numeric scale that runs from zero to hundred for representing this sentiment. All values below the fifty mark imply a fearful market, while those above the threshold mean investors are greedy right now. End values of above 75 and below 25 indicate extreme sentiments of “extreme greed” and “extreme fear,” respectively. Now, here is a chart from the latest weekly report from Arcane Research, that shows the trend in the crypto fear and greed index over the past year: Looks like the value of the indicator has been very low in recent weeks | Source: Arcane Research's The Weekly Update - Week 25, 2022 As

Price analysis 6/29: BTC, ETH, BNB, XRP, ADA, SOL, DOGE, DOT, SHIB, LEO

Bitcoin and altcoins gave up the gains of last week’s relief rally and June 29’s dip below $20,000 suggests bears are intent on pushing the market back to its yearly lows. The United States equities markets have given back some of the gains made last week and that has pulled Bitcoin to the psychological support at $20,000. This suggests that investors are nervous to buy risky assets at higher levels. Meanwhile, while speaking to the hosts of the Bankless podcast on June 23, Mark Cuban said that the crypto bear market could end after the price gets so cheap that investors go and start buying or an application with utility is launched that attracts users. Russian Duma passes bill to remove VAT, lower income tax rates on digital asset sales

Russia is turning to blockchain technology in an effort to counteract the economic isolation brought on by the sanctions imposed due to its invasion of Ukraine. The State Duma, the lower house of the Russian legislature, has passed a bill on the taxation of digital assets that exempts their sale from value-added tax (VAT) in the Russian Federation. Some other services of digital asset exchanges will also be exempted, according to state-run news service RIA Novosti.  In addition, the bill established income tax rates of 13% for Russian exchanges on the first 5 million rubles (currently about U$93,000) of the taxable base annually, 15% on amounts above that limit and 15% across the board for foreign exchange operators. The current tax rate for companies is 20% . The taxation of digital assets under the bill is analogous to securities taxes, RIA Novosti reports. The government noted in the bill that a separate tax procedure for digital assets is key to the creation of an effective an

Switzerland-based crypto mining firm expands operations to Texas

The company reported its operations in the United States will have an initial capacity of 3 megawatts, aiming for the firm’s total hashrate to be more than 1.6 EH/s. White Rock Management, a cryptocurrency mining company based in Switzerland, said it will be expanding its operations to the United States, starting with Texas. In a Tuesday announcement, White Rock said it will be partnering with Natural Gas Onsite Neutralization, or NGON, a company that captures natural gas that would otherwise be burned and converts it to energy for use in the firm’s Bitcoin ( BTC ) mining operations. White Rock said it will be operating out of NGON’s facility in the Brazos Valley region, mining BTC using “environmentally responsible” methods. According to White Rock CEO Andy Long, the move into Texas was just the first in the firm’s plans to expand its BTC mining operations to areas capable of providing energy from natural gas outside the scope of the state’s power grid. The company began mining c

Bitcoin “Reserve Risk” Metric Approaches All-Time Lows

Data shows the Bitcoin “reserve risk” indicator has recently plunged down and is now reaching all-time lows only seen back in 2015 bear and the March 2020 COVID crash. Bitcoin Reserve Risk Suggests HODLing Relative To Price Is Strong According to the latest weekly report from Glassnode, BTC investors have been holding strong onto their coins despite the large decline in the crypto’s price recently. Before looking at what the “reserve risk” indicator does, it’s best to get an understanding of a couple concepts first. A “coin day” is accumulated in the market for each 1 BTC that stays unmoved for a day. The sum of such coin days in the entire market can tell us about how dormant the long-term holder supply has been. Because of this, the sum of coin days can be an effective way of measuring the conviction of hodlers in the Bitcoin market. However, there is another way to interpret the coin days and hence the LTH conviction; as Glassnode explains: Stronger hands will resist the tempt

Are custodied crypto funds at risk? Industry veterans explain

Investments under custody are usually very safe, until the accountability of the custodian is called into question. With rumors of insolvency flying high among crypto firms such as Celsius and Three Arrows Capital, investors couldn't help but ask a simple question: What happened to all the funds that were supposedly under "safe custody?" As it turns out, a small fraction of crypto firms began leveraged trading with customers' deposits to deliver promised high APY returns on supposedly fixed-income instruments. Things worked out well when the market was thought to have endless potential. However, as token prices plunged, such firms simultaneously suffered heavy losses on their positions and an increase in withdrawal requests as investors rushed to protect their capital. The combination of selling pressures led to lower coin prices and the likely obliteration of investors' initial principal as firms allegedly became insolvent. Not all asset custodians took enor

Central African Republic president launches crypto initiative following Bitcoin adoption

The Sango project’s plans include building a "legal crypto hub," expanding the adoption of Bitcoin, and creating a “crypto island” — a special economic zone in the metaverse. Faustin-Archange Touadéra, president of the Central African Republic, has announced the government will be backing an initiative centered around developing the country’s blockchain infrastructure. In a Monday announcement on Twitter, Touadéra said the CAR government would be launching Sango, a crypto initiative proposed following the country’s adoption of Bitcoin ( BTC ) as legal tender in April. According to Sango’s website, the government intends to launch the program during a July 3 event in which the president, members of his cabinet and industry experts will discuss the physical and digital infrastructure needed for the CAR to enter the crypto space, as well as the legal framework for the country. The Sango project’s plans include building a “legal crypto hub” aimed at attracting businesses a

'Crypto is just like the end of the 90s with the internet bubble,' says Hodl CEO Maurice Mureau

Mureau remains bullish on crypto's outlook despite a severe bear market in recent months. For Maurice Mureau, CEO of crypto investment fund operator Hodl, there's "not a lot left" to invest in anymore. With soaring inflation, bonds are no go, real estate is getting more difficult but there is one asset class that's (unsurprisingly) catching the fund manager's attention — cryptocurrencies. During the European Blockchain Convention in Barcelona this week, Cointelegraph editor Aaron Wood sat down with Mureau, who gave his insight on the outlook of the digital assets investment landscape. "It's just like the end of the 90s with the internet bubble, so you're still early in the space," said Mureau. "A very solid use case for crypto is becoming apparent in the gaming industry, where people invest time that you can earn from it, and that's all arranged by the blockchain." He reiterated that there would be only 21 million Bitcoin in
